Spread the news out, loud!
This July sees one of Australia’s most exciting improvising duos Spartak take the road again in support of their new mini album ‘No Signal’, a collection of new work following on from last year’s acclaimed ‘Tales From The Colony Room’, released on hellosQuare recordings. This tour will also see Spartak return to Singapore and Malaysia with their equally beautiful and caustic music to again after their successful first trip back in 2007.
As Spartak, Shoeb Ahmad (guitar, computer, voice, woodwinds) and Evan Dorrian (drum kit, percussion, computer, field recordings) have spent the last three years exploring a hybrid sound of ‘indie’ rock, free jazz, electronic music and modern composition through improvisation, both live and on record.
Their first album ‘Tales From The Colony Room’, recorded by themselves and mastered by Taylor Deupree from the esteemed American label 12k received praise from highly respected online magazines such as Vital Weekly (The Netherlands), Cyclic Defrost (Australia), Textura.org (Canada) amongst others while also seeing them feature on both national and independent radio through Australia. Matthew Levinson, co-editor of Cyclic Defrost proclaimed on the national alternative radio station Triple J that ‘Tales…’ was one of his favourite albums of the year, local or international on their ‘The Soundlab’ show while Spartak were also asked to on the first live-to-air performance for the program ‘New Music Up Late’ on the nationwide classical music station ABC Classic FM towards the end of 2008.
This new mini album sees them explore the darkest corners of their sound, focusing on microscopic textures and minimal tones that highlight the subtleties in their music. These recordings most originate from a trip in January which saw Spartak travel to the NSW South Coast to record their upcoming album (titled ‘Verona’) and has been re-worked in post-production to give life to a new set of arrangements and ideas.
This two-day session saw them focus on experimentation and pure improvisation, in the process trying different instruments (Shoeb using the flute for instance, Evan an organ keyboard) and techniques. This kind of approach lead to pieces like ‘In A Field Of Light’ that sees pulses of processed detritus tread over a digital field while the organic sounds of junk metal and percussion dictate the sound. The long form ‘Sleet/Skid’ takes the heavy drift rock of bands like Earth and Isis and pull it apart at the seams before a tribal finale that recalls Animal Collective. The one piece that began it’s life earlier, ‘The Distance From Here To Time’, revisits a live performance recorded in Singapore and given a dense makeover of bell tones, crisp glitches and ambient drones do battle with backwards voices and apocalyptic drums.
‘If post-rock were defined more literally, Spartak would be its standard bearers’ (Time Off Magazine - Australia)
‘Great free inspired rock/jazz/electronics, along the lines of their Viennese counterparts of Radian and all their off spring’ (Vital Weekly – The Netherlands)
‘Like some post-punk composite of high concept sound art and cathartic rock abandon’ (Cyclic Defrost - Australia)
‘Beautifully sparkling post-jazz processed pleasure’ (Rock-A-Rolla Magazine – UK)
‘Spartak are set to become one of Australia’s most current and exciting experimental acts’ (The Silent Ballet – USA)

Go tell your mom!
come and let’s partayyyyyy!!!!!

ok. it was near the end of 2004.
we split-up and since then, i heard nothing from her. i never even really know why we end-up the way we ended-up.
being heart-broken, i decided to name a gig as “a disaster after valentine’s”. no one really know why i gave such a title. it may bring bad luck some suggested. i don’t bother. the label name itself means bad luck. what to expect then? and it fits well since the gig was indeed organised almost a week after valentine’s.
i was broken-hearted and to finally be able to organise a gig under own label and to have bands that made up of mostly friends and those that i really love, i can’t be happier. luckily, it was a success. since then, the gig had been organised every year, some time after the valentine’s. last year, 2008, saw its fourth installment. it was postponed until april since the touring band (off minor) would only come later and it should be a finale. the end of its series. the last gig from the struggling label. it went ok. and to some extent i would say i was really pleased. that was some happy moment i would treasure.
now, it’s feb 2009. i’m still single. what luck eh? am i really that afraid of commitment? i never know for sure. five years gone and it feels just like yesterday. now my head start to think, no, not the question of when will i have a steady gf or “worse” getting married but, but… should i/WE revive the Valentine’s DISASTER?
